Police officers disrupt Socialist Party member’s political training session in Matero

Zambia Police officers this morning raided and disrupted an ideological training session organised by the leadership of the recently-launched Socialist Party in Lusaka’s Matero compound for their membership.

Socialist Party general secretary Dr Cosmas Musumali, disclosed in a brief statement posted on the party’s Facebook page that two of the organisers of the political education session were in the process arrested and teaching materials, cellular phones, and handbags confiscated.

“This morning around 10:45, the SP comrades had organised a training session for its members in a home in Matero compound. The police raided the premises. I am informed that two of our comrades have been arrested and items (including a white board, phones and ladies handbags) confiscated,” Dr Musumali stated. “The whole area is now surrounded by the police and people are being harassed and abused. This is unacceptable and unwarranted. As a Party we reserve the right to operate without harassment. We further demand the immediate release of the arrested comrades and a return of all confiscated items to the owners.”

This is just one of the many acts of heavy handedness from the PF government against the Socialist Party which used its Easter Weekend launch in Lusaka, to suggestively announce Dr Fred M’membe as the party’s 2021 presidential candidate, and Dr Musumali as his running mate.

Within 24 hours after the party’s launch, President Edgar Lungu ordered for the expulsion of the Cuban Ambassador to Zambia Nelson Pages Vilas, after he attended the event to convey greetings from the Communist Party of Cuba to the Socialist Party of Zambia.

Furthermore, international delegates flying from all over the world to attend the Socialist Party launch were turned away at Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport following varied durations of detention and harassment.
