The government of Botswana is working on guidelines to restrict importation of cement in order to create more local jobs.
Trade minister Bogolo Kenewendo, said this when addressing the media yesterday in Gaborone.
Kenewendo said research has shown that the cement industry has the potential to create job opportunities and assist in economic diversification.
Kenewendo said the proposed restrictions will require that 70 per cent of the cement be sourced from local manufacturing companies and 30 per cent be imported.
She said the importation of cement will be done through the issuance of import permits and that the importer will be required to submit evidence that indeed they have satisfied the 70 per cent requirement.
The minister said the implementation is envisaged to come into force at the beginning of September./Yarona FM
